The Pediatric Audiologist’s Role to Support the Texas Early Hearing Detection & Intervention System Thursday, November 11, 2010 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
The goal of early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) is to maximize linguistic and communicative competence and literacy development for children who are hard of hearing or deaf. Achieving this result is dependent upon the early detection of, and intervention for, infants with hearing loss (early hearing detection and intervention, [EHDI]) through integrated, interdisciplinary state and national systems of universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS), evaluation, and family-centered intervention. Participants will be part of an interactive session in which the State’s EHDI interagency representatives will share elements of the Texas Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Statewide Campaign and related initiatives now underway in select “Communities of Change” across Texas in an effort to improve follow-up outcomes for families of infants and toddlers navigating the complex EHDI system of care. This session will detail the role of the pediatric audiology provider to support the local EHDI network of care, highlight parental issues related to newborn hearing screening and diagnosis, and the importance of building collaborative partnerships between families, early intervention programs, pediatric audiology providers and medical home.
